Survival movies are possibly my favorite genre and this movie does engage until the end despite the lack of dialogue or acting from Redford. But there's nothing new here except the lack of dialogue and acting.
I've decided its simply the anticipation that keeps one watching. In fact if this movie didn't star Robert Redford the reviews would not be as kind. He gets away with doing nothing as an actor in this because he's Robert Redford.
The emperor has no close people. It may have been full of symbolism or hidden messages that I didn't pick up but I was too indifferent by the end to even find out. (spoiler alert).....there isn't even any kind of morality tale in it because he gives up in the end.
It would have made more sense if he'd drowned frankly instead of the cliched finish. Then everyone could gush about it being a nihilistic master stroke. If you want to watch a great survival movie staring Redford watch Jeremiah Johnson.
