Review of All Is Lost (2013) by Stephen H — 01 Mar 2014
Like "Gravity," "All Is Lost" is an engrossing look at one person's attempt to survive amidst a great vastness. Unlike "Gravity," this film doesn't attempt to curry favor with special effects or a feel-good story that strives to flatter the audience.
"All Is Lost" is so compelling because it focuses entirely on the drama of trying to get through a series of worsening circumstances. At its center is Redford, who is the only character we see in the movie, and who utters just a few lines.
But his ability to become a man doing battle with the elements is an acting achievement unlike any I've ever seen. He chooses restraint and honesty -- and those choices make this compelling from start to finish.
