Review of All Good Things (2010) by Stevie C — 13 Dec 2010
All Good Things must come to an end. Many good things do come to an end in this movie - but the movie itself felt sort of unfinished. And despite the fact that it's based on true events (with just a few details, such as names, changing) it certainly distorts the truth and makes accusations. It doesn't show anything, but it insinuates - and that's even worse.
For some reason I thought that this movie was a romantic comedy. I hadn't seen the trailer and judging from the actors alone, I figured it would be something light about love and romance and happy endings. Boy, was I wrong.
I have to admit though that the performances are wonderful - just wonderful. This is the best I've seen of Kirsten Dunst, Ryan Gosling was great but not at his greatest, Frank Langella typically extraordinary, and Philip Baker gave what I thought was the best performance in the movie.
The story is compelling enough, and it makes you wonder and doubt and ask and make assumptions, but it's a pretty messy plot with loose ends flying all over the place. Besides the performances and a superficial interest it presents as a movie, I wasn't all that impressed. But I do consider it a worthy watch nonetheless.
