Andrew J best known for his documentary Capturing the Friedmans directs this fictional account of a true-crime saga. At the very beginning it was a fascinating story, unfortunately the film became sluggish during the second half.

The saving grace for this film is some really great acting. After viewing Blue Valentine, there is without a doubt that Ryan Gosling is a very gifted actor. Frank Langella is as usual, a master of his craft. He is portrayed as a stingy, contemptible and manipulative patriarch.

The ending is inconclusive probably due to the fact that it is still an open case. Another problem could be that they had bitten more than they can chew:murder mystery, young romance, family drama, fiction and reality, the filmmakers tried to condense 30 years of information regarding an unsolved murder case into under two hours of film.
