Review of All Dogs Go to Heaven (1989) by Tommy B — 14 Oct 2009
Probably the last great family film Don Bluth made before he lost his mind and started making bland movies like ROCK-A-DOODLE and ANASTASIA. Featuring memorable characters voiced by the likes of Burt Reynolds and Dom DeLuis, this movie deals with some heavy themes for kids, which is what I enjoy about it.
It also has some pretty terrifying shit in it, one of the highlights being Charlie's dream of eternal damnation in dog Hell, where a giant fiery dog demon sends his minions to rip our protagonist to shreds while he tries to escape from Death's boat on the river Styx.
..which is filled with lava. You know, kids stuff! In all seriousness, this movie has an edge that is lacking from family fare today, with the exception of Pixar movies like UP. It's a prime example of Bluth's philosophy that kids can handle anything, so long as it has a happy ending.
Maybe I look at this one with rose-tinted glasses, but I think it's a great movie that I will definitely show my kids one day (given I eventually have some).
