Review of All Dogs Go to Heaven (1989) by Mike B — 18 Jul 2011
How is this film not remembered better? This is a CLASSIC!!!! Don Bluths animation studio does not get the love of disney or pixer and while its not as consistent, that is a crime to some of the gems such as this (and The Land before Time!) This is simply such an original kids film with subjects, themes, and characters you wont find anywhere else.
The main character, the main PROTAGONIST character in this kids movie is a true mutt who gambles, drinks, steals, and USES a young female ORPHAN (who can talk to animals)! Also he get murdered in the first 15 minutes of the movie.
Then when he gets to heaven he basically says this place is no fun and I want to go back, then he rekidnaps the orphan from the dog that murdered him. The only real problem with the film is that the songs are fairly forgettable.
But thats really not a huge issue beacuse they are not as front and center as in many disney films of the 90s. I just love cartoons where there are lines like "we are going to die". That is straght out of temple of doom! Also the young orphan is super innocent and adorable.
Almost a slightly older boo from monsters inc. Anyways, this film has it all....from adorable puppies to nighmare with demons. what more could you want?
