Review of All Dogs Go to Heaven (1989) by Jiana W — 21 Feb 2013
All Dogs Go To Heaven was one of my favorite movies growing up. It's incredibly sweet and heartfelt, with some slightly mature themes. I read somewhere that they had to cut some scenes to keep it from a PG rating and I believe it. Jail-time, framing, murder, *a lot* of gambling, a fairly vivid nightmare about Hell... as a kid I just saw talking animals, songs and the humor but there really were some deeper, complex themes running throughout this film that I missed. I don't know how the Hell scene didn't scare me given I was a really sensitive kid.
The songs are good and suitable for the situations in the movie. The voice acting is terrific and Judith Barsi's voiceover for the orphan Anne Marie is cute and sweet, underlining what a true tragedy her death was at such a young age. She was talented. I'm almost 25 now and this movie makes me cry as if I were 8-- and I can still recite this movie line for line.
