Review of All About Steve (2009) by Van R — 23 May 2012
The Sandra Bullock comedy ALL ABOVE STEVE is about a harmless idiot who makes up crossword puzzles for her hometown newspaper but does not have a life of her own outside her own loquacity. Mary wears red boots and rattles on like a Federal Express spokesman.
She goes on a blind date with Steve (Bradley Cooper of THE HANGOVER) and attacks him in the back of his truck. As they are ripping off their clothes, Steve receives a phone call from the television news organization that he works for and is told to go out and cover a news story.
He is the videographer for CCN TV newsman Thomas Haden Church. Mary loses her job when she makes out a crossword puzzle about Steve and nobody can come up with the answers. Mary embarks on a cross-country road trip to hook up with Steve.
One of the big news stories that Steve has to shoot involves an infant born with a third leg. Advocates for the pro-leg side and the anti-leg side mass outside the hospitable in Oklohama City. Since when did birth defects become a source of humor.
Scenarist Kim Barker appropriates the storyline from the Billy Wilder satire ACE IN THE HOLE when Steve's last assignment takes him to a fairgrounds site where a group of deaf children on a field trip are trapped in a cave-in at an abandoned mine shaft, Meanwhile, what Mary does not know is that Steve does not want her.
She amounts to a stalker and director Paul Traill uses the JAWS and PSYCHO music cues to introduce her in scenes. ABOVE STEVE celebrates eccenticities. Sandra Bullock looks and acts like she is impersonating spunky Rosanna Arquette of PULP FICTION fame.
More stupid than silly. Sandra is looking a little to mature to be playing such a nitwit. It is like she is poaching on Adam Sandler's private game reserve of cretins. This is Bullock's version of THE WATERBOY.
