Review of All About Lily Chou-Chou (2001) by Courtney B — 24 Jul 2008
With shifts in time, different use of style and a multitude of characters (not only in the flesh but also represented as contributors to an online fan site) this movie is intentionally confusing. There are some plot resolutions , but the main pleasures are in the rich visual images which seem to match the dreamy Debussy pieces that reoccur throughout.
The heady sequence in Okinawa is a highlight. The music of Lily Chou-Chou doesn't seem to match the ethereal descriptions and devout behaviour of the fans, but that doesn't really matter. It is ultimately about the cruelty of adolescence and the desire to escape.
Oh and there's some kendo in it, which is cool.
