Review of All About Eve (1950) by Lito B — 01 Sep 2008
Here is one of the greatest films in the history of the cinema and a must see for anyone who enjoys the theater! Bette Davis delivers what may be her grandest performance of all time, as Margo Channing, the vain star of the theater who meets her match when a young ingenue named Eve, played by Anne Baxter becomes cradled under Margo's wing as her #1 fan.
What Margo doesn't know is that Eve has a master plan in which to usurp and best her idol and eventually take her place. The supporting cast is perhaps one of the best ever and this is undeniably one of the finest screenplays ever written.
George Sanders seethes and menaces in his Oscar winning portrayal of Addison DeWitt, the acerbic theater critic. Celeste Holm, Garry Merrill, Hugh Marlowe, Thelma Ritter, and a very young Marilyn Monroe offer great performances.
No one should miss this winner of 6 Oscars including Best Picture. Its director Joseph L. Mankiewicz was deservedly cited as Best Director and won for writing. A gem from start to finish.
