Review of Aliens (1986) by Billy G — 24 May 2017
Not quite as good as the first film, however 'Aliens' is more than worthy as a follow-up to a masterpiece. Quite possibly one of the greatest sequels ever made actually. James Cameron's film does what any good sequel should do: take what was great about the first film and expand upon its mythology.
The Space Marines are an awesome addition and it's fun seeing Sigourney Weaver return as Ripley (probably THE quintessential female badass in film). But revealing the Alien creature to be a hive that can be mowed down by machine guns makes them less terrifying than they were in the original.
While it fits with the story Cameron is telling, it is a drastic tone shift from the first. Also, as awesome as Ripley is, she doesn't quite feel like the same character and one has to wonder how she all of a sudden was able to defeat part of a hive of Aliens and their Queen all by herself.
But none of these nitpicks make 'Aliens' a bad film by any means.
