Review of Aliens (1986) by Reece L — 12 Jul 2017
Aliens is the second movie in the Alien franchise that gradually gets worse as it goes on then suddenly better again. Ridley Scott passes this movie to James Cameron to direct this second movie. Ridley Scott made a smart choice not to involve himself in any contracts making him have to direct movies like Alien vs Predator. When I saw this movie I had seen the movies in this order: Alien, Prometheus, and Alien: Covenant. I loved the series. The first movie is a slow building master piece, and the two new installments are faster and featuring more effects. I liked all of them. Then I saw Aliens, and I was blown away.
This is still a slow building movie, like the first one. The first hour of the movie is just sheer character development, suspense building, and plot setups. And just like the first one, I like it. Despite.
having a brand new director, this movie did a lot of the same things as the original- and I love it. But when this movie gets going, it gets going and doesn't stop. I liked it a lot better than the first movie because the original didn't really feel as suspenseful as this one. It reminds me a lot of Die Hard, the characters just never get a break, and when you think it's finally over there's more complications.
The performances are great as well. Sigourney Weaver does amazing in this movie, and really captures the suspense that the script supplies. I also liked the child actor as Newt, she was one of the best child actors I've seen in a movie. The creature performers also do really well, the alien feels very realistic.
Like I mentioned earlier, this movie does not give its characters a break. While this did feel repetitive of Alien at first, it overdid the original so much that it wasn't repetitive any more. The mother alien towards the end is super scary and awesome. The execution of this movie is brilliant and terrifying.
Overall, this movie is horrifying, well performed, well directed, and exilerating. It starts out suspenseful and slow building, but after that it's non-stop. The characters are likeable, the aliens are scary and amazing, and this movie is a must watch!
