Review of Aliens (1986) by Griffin B — 03 Feb 2015
Human beings are supposed to the villains in this series, not the Xenomorphs. The Xenomorphs are just an obstacle; they are instinct-driven creatures doing what they do. Burke was the villain of this story.
The Queen ruins all that. She's a dumb, evil, stereotypical movie monster. Her presence almost ruins the whole movie for me. But so many of the other elements are handled so expertly that it almost doesn't matter.
Sigourney Weaver is amazing, the rest of the cast is really stellar, the set design, props, and general atmosphere are perfect, the central relationship of the film (Newt becoming Ripley's surrogate daughter) is deeply affecting, and so on.
Ultimately, this movie is great and undeniably a classic, but I don't even consider it to be in the same league as the first.
