Review of Aliens (1986) by Eirika K — 28 Jul 2018
In producing a sequel to one of the greatest horror films ever a clever decision was made; rather than trying to match the suspense of the first film, this would be a different kind of beast: going for action and thrills.
The excellent plot delivers everything you want from a sequel, except from the character work of the first film. True Ripley is fleshed out, and her relationship with Newt humanises her, but the rest of the team seem like caricatures whereas the original worked so well because the crew felt like real people.
The marines are also 80's action movie stereotypes, which dates it, whilst Ridley Scott's masterpiece has a timeless quality to it. Still, this one complaint is mostly forgivable in exchange for high-class entertainment and it is certainly forgotten once the action starts.
