Review of Alien³ (1992) by Shawn D — 05 Jan 2019
At 7 years old I demanded to see this movie with my parents while jumping up and down on the couch yelling it. My mother was so mad she grabbed me by the arm and dangerously menaced me by saying: "Fine, but you will not be allowed to turn away from the screen for one second!" I thought I was victorious, after all I thought it was in space and Star Wars was in space so they were connected.
What a silly boy. After seeing Alien I was terrified of the creature for years. It wasn't until 1996 after I had been on sleep medication due to nightmares for 4 years that I overcame my fear. How did that happen.
Well a school counselor came up with a brilliant idea. He wanted me to figure out how the director shot every scene in aliens and made me watch it over and over again and explain the scenes. It was a brilliant idea, just like Alien.
Alien is all about mood, pace and the craft of film-making. Every person involved in this film brought something to the table and you can see the end result. It is real, visceral and deep on so many levels.
Just talking about the film and it's sexual themes can take hours because most people don't notice most of it. There is arguments that the alien is weak and dying because of it's color change and slow movement.
It just kills people because they keep making so much noise or because they are intruding in it's area. Whatever the case of any debate they are endless for this film much like all good Sci-fi films.
This one holds the crown in my opinion over all of them.
