Review of Alien Resurrection (1997) by Brian N — 28 Jun 2012
Its been some time since I watched this film, since I originally saw it in the theaters in fact, and this film simply doesn't do it for me. Its better then the third film, well, so are most movies, but the first two Alien films stand far above the second two.
I think they tried too hard to be too weird in this film. Its almost three centuries after the last one and it never feels like it's that far in the future, it could be the next day. They go out of their way to do random stuff, but is way over done.
We've seen it all before and when Ripley isn't scared, why should I be? I didn't care for the characters at all and many gave up way too easy. This is just another film that should never have been made, they should have had Ripley wake up in stasis from the bad dream that was #3 and started there with a better story.
Prometheus will hopefully make better use of this universe. On a side note, when you watch this film, being written by Joss Whedon, you will notice, or at least I did, similarities between the Betty crew and the Firefly crew, as if the idea started here.
