Review of Alien Resurrection (1997) by Tibor B — 13 Nov 2010

Once you find out that Danny Boyle was once in line to direct, addressing Resurrection's faults becomes even more painful. While the mere existence of the film after the finality of Alien 3 just five years earlier screams "let's milk this cash cow dry', there is some merit in the interesting ideas put forth by Joss Whedon's screenplay and in director Jean-Pierre Jeunet's unique visual style; the first two acts are beautiful to look at, with great moments such as the mess-hall face off and the whole underwater set piece.

Ultimately however, Jeunet is miscast as a Hollywood director (he admits as much himself), and the third act's snotty creatures and bizzare sexual imagery has caused the whole film to be regarded as bad- as in enough to get it near the top of "worst sequel of all time" lists bad.

There is more to it than that, but ultimately Resurrection's worst crime is that it is simply the blandest entry in the franchise. One can only wonder what Danny Boyle would have done with it.
