Review of Alien Resurrection (1997) by Chris Michael S — 13 Jan 2011
A step up from Alien 3, but not up to par with the first two. I am glad they dropped the nihilistic tone and went for something a little more accessible. Instead of being groundbreaking, however, it ended up being more of a typical "Blockbuster" type action movie.
And that's okay. Alien Resurrection is the best-looking film of the series. In 1997, these effects were pretty much state-of-the-art. Sigourney Weaver added a brand new layer to Ripley's character, which I thought made things a little more interesting.
While this is nowhere near Jean-Pierre Jeunet's best work, I'm glad he was able to steer the series back in the right direction (with the help of screenwriter Joss Whedon of course), and just make something enjoyable out of it.
