Review of Alien: Covenant (2017) by Vasco M — 27 Sep 2017
'Alien: Covenant' does a lot of things right. The entire first act of the movie is a joy to watch, standouts like Pierce's and Fassbender's interaction as well as the establishing shots of the Covenant itself and the alien planet being incredible visual highlights.
The Covenant's crew is also very well cast, Katherine Waterston being a surprisingly engaging character and a lot of fun to watch, even when she isn't doing much. However, Ridley Scott falls into the trap of trying to recreate a new 'Ripley', some key scenes being easily comparable to those seen in the original 'Alien'.
New elements like the excellently gory weaponized xenomorph virus, whilst visually spectacular, can feel out like an after-thought, and too many of these forced moments one after the other eventually turn into a sequence of ridiculous chance events that exist only to segway from one key moment to the other while disregarding pacing and logic that even in a sci-fi universe such as this cannot warrant suspension of disbelief.
Ultimately, 'Alien: Covenant' could have been a much better movie if it didn't constantly insult the audience's intelligence.
