Review of Alien: Covenant (2017) by Ethan P — 15 Jan 2018
I'm a huge fan of Ridley Scott, for the most part. He's directed some of my favorite genre films to date, but he seems absolutely committed to making a movie about religion and theology. The problem is, he keeps trying to do this in an Alien film.
I enjoyed Prometheus just fine, if not for the stupid pills many of the characters seemed to take during the film. Alien Covenant was an average follow-up to the 2012 sci-fi prequel. Covenant had good moments and great visuals, but came off as the filler comic book tie-in to a movie we didn't get.
The movie did present some interesting questions and I do want to see Scott finish his new Alien series up - if not to just evaluate them as a whole than by piecemeal, but that looks unlikely, especially with most of the assets for the sequel being auctioned off at the end of 2017.
The one thing that annoys me the most is that these movies essentially killed the proposed Alien sequel that Neil Blokamp was working on ... so sad.
