Review of Alien: Covenant (2017) by Minijunkie — 19 May 2017
If you want to enjoy this movie, do yourself a favor: realize it is not an Alien movie. It is Prometheus 2. Like 100%, without a doubt, Prometheus 2. There is actually very little of the traditional "Alien" in this movie that people are expecting, and I think that's why a lot of people are reacting very negatively.
I'm guessing there were Marketing and Studio reasons to call it Alien, which screws up expectations. Marketing is screwing up the reception of the film by making people think it's something else entirely. As Prometheus 2 I really liked it. .
I think it's actually really cool how it all weaves together. The problem is people think Ridley was playing fast and loose with how the Alien ecology works - but he wasn't...90% of what we saw happening with the spores and weird looking aliens was Davids **** up creations using the "highly malleable" pathogen running amok. The alien that came out of the captain near the end was the first "true" alien born.
Sure there were some silly things like the guy getting impregnated THAT fast etc, but most of these movies have things like that (like the idiot biologist snake-charmer in Prometheus 1). That's why I give it an 8. Big mistake calling it Alien imo.
