Review of Alien: Covenant (2017) by Chiotare D — 17 Nov 2017
Alien: Covenant truly feels like an origin story to this dark universe Ridley Scott created. A glaring problem with this movie are the characters. While well-acted, only a handful of characters were given enough screen time to incorporate some kind of personality to them and connect with the audience. The rest were obviously meant to be disposable for the sake of plot. Their idiocy stands out and will likely stick to some of the viewers throughout the remaining run time. It was not until the third act that we see some human intelligence on these characters. On the other hand, some parts of the movie felt slow, especially the second act. Some scenes could have been cut without any effect on the overall story.
With that being said, the cinematography is beautiful. The vastness of space, revealing a new world. These breathe life to the movie. Some effects could have been much better (especially the Xenomorph) but this can be easily overlooked. The movie also does not overdo it with the gore which makes the R rating understandable.
Alien: Covenant had its flaws but fans of the Alien franchise will find it intriguing at the very least.
