Review of Alien: Covenant (2017) by Phil S — 26 May 2017
Alien: Covenant feels like a half-hearted compromise between trying to be an Alien movie and a sequel to Prometheus. In the end, it would seem that it does little to please either audience. Those who appreciated Prometheus' philosophical intrigue will have few questions asked and even fewer answered.
Those who appreciated Alien's horror atmosphere will find sparse scares and little screentime for xenomorphs. There's just something about the whole presentation that despite being technically well-acted and well-shot in many respects, it just feels somewhat dull, laboring, and lacking in inspiration.
It has some moments of brilliance, and perhaps with a few more drafts of the script, it could have topped Prometheus at least, but as it stands with what we got, Covenant is a phoned in entry to Ridley Scott's filmography.
Not a bad film, but it does just the bare minimum to hold your attention.
