Review of Alien: Covenant (2017) by Vladimir J — 01 Jun 2017
"Alien: Covenant" is the sixth installment in the Alien universe and a follow-up to the somewhat divisive "Prometheus" storyline. What was supposed to be a direct sequel to Prometheus, with little to no Xenomorphs, turned into somewhat of a handshake from to go from one storyline and straight into the "Alien" universe like a face hugger sodomizing its victim's throat, it was gentle but you knew it was happening.
Positives.
When Ridley Scott announced he was returning to "Alien" but with a story that explained who the "Space Jokey" was in the abandoned starship in the first installment, it made fans of the story excited but when Prometheus failed to deliver Xenomorph fun, fans decided to take a step back from it, even though the story and themes presented in the film, although complex and very thought provoking, were giving the entire Alien "universe" a very strong foundation to validate the existence of the Xenomorph.
"Covenant" continues the story and theme of Prometheus up to a point but with a simple "back burst," it turns into a straight up Alien film. In a way, you get a glimpse of what Ridley Scott's "Aliens" might have been because this film is horrifying at times and at the same time, mind blowing in the twists it presents for the Alien timeline. The action and pace are great when the shit really starts and you might find yourself awestruck with the plot as it leaves you wanting to know more and see where it goes and how it will connect to "Alien.".
Negatives.
The beginning of the film is a slow burn, you might find yourself wishing "get to it already" but in hindsight, it is really necessary to learn who the crew is and why they are important. The fun really starts in the second half of the film so expect to wait a bit but it does pay off. Aside from the beginning, the rest of the film is just what you want in an Alien film.
Overall.
"Alien: Covenant" had me awestruck and scared for the crew, not just one character. Even though there really isn't a "Ripley" in the film, you do find yourself caring for the entire crew and their survival. The pace is fantastic when it starts and it isn't too long of a wait for the fun. Also, the use of the original "Alien" theme is sure to make any Alien fan tear up as it has not been really used since the original film.
Score Card.
Rating: 4/5.
Rewatchable: Yes.
"Drop Everything" factor: Yes.
Entertaining: Yes.
