Review of Alien: Covenant (2017) by Steven G — 08 Sep 2018
Alien covenant is the sequel to Prometheus but still the prequel to the original Alien. It follows Daniels and the rest of the covenants crew. There on a mission to inhabit another planet but on the way find an identical planet that's only a few weeks away.
So they go there to check it out and as you would expect bad things happen. This movie decided to ditch the intelligence and thought of Prometheus for another Alien movie that just continues the story of Prometheus.
That doesn't mean it's a terrible movie. Again we have a female protagonist who loses her love interest. The difference is we never get to truly meet him which I like better. It gives us fewer characters to have to keep up with.
That's another positive with this movie, it understands that side characters are side characters and doesn't give them to much attention. But that leads into my negatives for this movie follows too many classic horror movie tropes, someone goes off to take a whiz by themselves, a person is locked in a room with the killer, etc.
Also, they use way too much CGI. I'm ok with CGI but the Alien franchise is known for building beautiful props and sets in real life. I mean for christ sake they CG the xenomorph. Also, there's is a sudden and not so subtle shift in tone from Prometheus to Alien.
It's fine and I was looking forward to it but it just didn't feel smooth. All in all a pretty disappointing sequel to a good prequel.
