Review of Alien: Covenant (2017) by Jack Q — 03 Jul 2017
So... I think Ridley Scott is trying to be the next George Lucas, and ruin his legacy with terrible prequels. First thing... the Pros: Beautiful cinematography. Excellent acting. Cons: Characters make insanely stupid decisions.
Horror elements of the Xenomorph are terrible. I was so bored, and couldn't help but see the allegory in it all. Normally, I don't go in for all the allegory that "can" be in a movie, but this one was hard to ignore.
My favorite character, the Android David represents Ridley Scott. The Necromorph represents the movie Prometheus. Billy Crudup's character represents the studios/executives, and the rest of the cast represents the fans.
If you look at this film, with those representations you'll see the meaning behind this movie... A big F U to the studios and fans. (There might be spoilers past here) Firstly, I enjoyed Prometheus, and was sad to see what it has become.
.. Clearly, Mr. Scott feels the same way. He clearly hates this movie, or the fact that it had to be tied to the Alien Franchise. No one trusted him after Prometheus, and he makes that clear with the interactions between David, the Necromorph, and Billy Crudup.
The studio did not trust Prometheus so they killed it, and forced him to make a more direct prequel to Alien. Watch that scene again. The one where the Necromorph is found by David, and then killed by Billy Crudup's character.
You will never unsee the allegory. The rest of the movie is just two lackluster Xenomorphs killing the rest of the crew, and then the obvious betrayal of David. This movie was one of the biggest disappointments ever.
