Review of Alien Abduction (2014) by Skyler J — 25 Nov 2014
Do yourself a favor and skip this one.
For these reasons & many others...
1) The main character (narrator).
It follows an autistic kid who films really useless moments. Thought it might be an interesting spin having a child with autism but it was pointless. It was more used as an excuse for bad camera work and he never says an interesting thing. The actors talk to him, but they never have an interesting conversation.
2) The acting.
All of them try way too hard and they all have typical roles. The dad is a sarcastic douche. The mom is there is "answer" all the stupid questions the kids ask. The brother makes fun of the sister for being a "girly girl." And, the sister is a girly girl. So I don't blame the brother I guess, but they are all uninteresting people.
3) Special FX.
The aliens were stupid. Whenever they got close to aliens, the camera would start sizzling out and get fuzzy, cool, yeah I get it. They mess with radio signals. But it totally takes you out of the movie because of how poorly it's done. I would say the ONLY part I was semi impressed with was Riley and the brother running out of the tunnel of cars. As the aliens approached, different lights from all the cars flashed and that was a pretty cool lighting effect. I think they had the lighting effects down good, the sound design was decent, but once again, with the camera and audio cutting out, it was distracting and less frightening.
Overall, too many dull moments & expected jump scares. Fourth five minutes in, I found myself skipping through the next 20 minutes to skip all the stupid pitch black running scenes.
There wasn't much to even take away from this movie as I like to watch crappy movies and find what works and what doesn't. But basically this whole movie didn't work, so there isn't much there.
