Review of Alien (1979) by Jon C — 24 Oct 2013
For 1997:
This is indeed Ridley Scott's 1st crowning achievement.
And it's one of my favorite horror flicks from the old days.
It launched Sigourney Weaver into stardom and slew of countless sequels.
Scott amazingly mixes suspense, horror, and subtle poetic themes even if it does involve a slasher in space in the form of a xenomorph alien life-form.
The movie is slow at the beginning but you have to acknowledge that's what works to its degree and it does a great job of it.
The production value is extraordinary with the outer space setting, the technology, the mystery of the mythology, the many questions asked that are never answered, and the alien of course sticks in the memory.
There's also barely any music and the intense screeches and background noises greatly increase the sheer terror.
Sci-fi and horror don't get any better than this.
