Review of Alien (1979) by Juan S — 01 Jan 2014
When most people think horror nowadays, they think, a bloodfest, jump scares, convolutes ideas that don't make much sense at all. Alien is the exact opposite. Ridley Scott crafted one of the greatest sci-fi epics of all time and one of the greatest horror movies ever made.
This movie takes its time developing a great science fiction story with a great background and so much information to take in. But while this is happening the suspense builds. Horror movies should scare you from suspense and fear of what's coming ahead, not knowing what will happen at any point in time. And when something does happen it's scary because of the stress and the suspense, not pools of blood. That is what Alien accomplishes.
The first 45 minutes are slow, I was thinking to myself, "This is a horror movie?" but after John Hurts death scene the film goes crazy just throwing things left and right that you were unprepared for after 45 minutes of exposition. It creates some of the most memorable moments in cinematic history.
