Review of Alien (1979) by Daniel V — 09 Feb 2014
In space, no one can hear you scream. Probably one of the greatest and most ominous tag lines ever written. I wish I was older than 1 when this came out in theaters.
Sigourney Weaver became the hero young girls could look up to and men could fantasize about. A sexy badass who looks good in tiny underwear. Although I prefer my badass ladies with curves, thinking of you Michelle Rodriquez, Ripley is hot as F. Solid supporting cast and top notch production design make this genre bender a Film Classic. According to my father and others who were able to see this masterpiece during its initial run, there was nothing like it before. Now horror sci-fi is it's own genre, but in 1979, Alien was in a universe all it's own. Suspenseful, tense, terrifying, horrifying, scary as hell! All are represented here and in fantastic fashion. 35 years later, all those words still apply. The version called "The Director's Cut" is kind of a misnomer. Ridley Scott says the version released in the theaters was his definitive version, and this coming from a man who has released 5 different cuts of Blade Runner. But I believe him. The DC is just fine, it doesn't add anything or take away anything, not so the case with its sequels. Either version of Alien rocks but if you want to see it as it was meant to be seen, Theatrical Cut is the way to go.
