Review of Alien (1979) by Andrew H — 04 Jan 2015
One of the greatest movies ever made. If not, in my opinion THE greatest movie.
There isn't much I can add to a review that has already been said.
The setting gives off a tremendous sense of claustrophobia and helplessness. Knowing that around the corner, there may be a drooling creature ready to puncture a hole through your head leaves you with so much tension that you've run out of a fresh set of nails to bite on.
The characters have each their own personality. Meaning that you could actually REMEMBER them after the movie and even care for them after they get picked off one by one.
Sigourney Weaver's performance was great, she made sure that her character really was just a normal women trapped and enclosed with a monster.
The soundtrack is stunningly immersive, suspenseful and generally unsettling. Perfect for a movie with such a good grip on all of those aspects.
The Alien's design is genius. Only a man like H.R Giger himself would have created such a masterpiece. What makes it scarier is that it's features are so different from other alien designs from other movies that it looked totally different and even that, you could barely see it all through the movie. Leaving the audience to speculate in fear what this monstrosity could ever look like.
Unfortunately, the media and Hollywood themselves have butchered the Alien's appearance so often that people have gotten so used to how it looks. Thus, rendering it unintimidating to some. But at the time, you could see why people were so afraid.
The plot is not recycled, THIS movie started the trend of sci-fi horror.
If you watch a movie that involves people trapped in space or in space with a monster trying to kill them, they are most likely trying to rip-off this movie.
I have nothing but praise for this masterpiece. Enough said.
