Review of Alien (1979) by Joshua W — 02 Jul 2013
When I was younger Aliens was my favorite of the original two because of the violence, the foul-mouthed, rebellious marines, and it's overall entertainment factor. When I was 17 I watched Alien again; alone with my surround sound loud, just watching the film to see if it really is better than it's sequel.
Dang. I was hooked from the beginning because of the brilliant pacing and slow music. I can see why people compare it to Jaws. However, Alien is much more intense. It began the whole "crew in space" theme, (not counting "2001" because of reasons you must watch the film to know!) and all of the characters are individuals that you actually root for. What surprised me was how enthralled Alien made me. It literally captivated me. The scares are genuine scares, and being trapped creates a huge sense of claustrophobia that is utilized to full effect. One of my favorite elements of Alien is it's timelessness. As a suspense/horror/thriller-this is one of the best to date. Sci-fi or not.
