Review of Alien (1979) by Ben B — 13 Mar 2017
"Alien" draws a fine line between classic science fiction and straight-up Gothic horror. Having been called "Halloween" in space, director Ridley Scott and screenwriter Dan O'Bannon craft a simple story in a complicated universe.
Not only does the movie gross out at times (THAT scene, you know which one I'm talking about), but it's just plain scary. The alien is anywhere, anytime, almost too intelligent to be stopped. Its appearance is notably shocking.
But at the heart of this movie, you have one of the most compelling and ballsy heroines in the history of cinema: Ripley, played by the terrific Sigourney Weaver. Thanks to her, Ripley is not only scared but brave and ready to fight.
There's no one else that can capture that type of heroine as effortlessly as Weaver does.
