Review of Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016) by Charles C — 30 May 2016
I wasn't that impressed with the 2010 Alice in Wonderland (I rated it a 5/10), so going in expecting the same level of quality I actually found this sequel to be a slight improvement. The world and characters are still as colorful as ever, but I was more engaged in the story this time.
Perhaps its because Alice now is a more competent and developed character. The plot moves along at a brisk pace, well-suited for younger audiences. I also like the central message of the film about not backing down from the "impossible".
Given the negative critical reviews, I was pleasantly surprised at how much enjoyment I got. It's not particularly deep or unique, but it's a fun ride. It makes me a little sad that the disappointing box office (probably due to a combination of bad marketing, release date competition, and a 6 year wait since the original) means a 3rd film is unlikely, since I wouldn't mind returning to this world again.
