Review of Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016) by Victor T — 06 Jul 2016
Regardless of how I or you feel about the first "Alice in Underland", it was such a box office success (earning more than a billion dollars), so a sequel was more than confirmed but surprisingly it took six years for said sequel to come to fruition. Is it better than its predecessor?
Three years have passed since the events of the first film, now Alice returns to "Underland" to find the Mad Hatter tormented by ghosts from his past. Determined to help his friend, Alice decides to confront Time himself in order to restore the Hatters piece of mind.
When you have a big commercial hit you would want to strike while the iron´s hot, wouldn't you? So when your follow-up arrives 6 years later, it´s more than likely to be doomed to failure, and that's exactly the case with "Alice Through the Looking Glass". "Through the Looking Glass" has the same problems that its predecessor suffered from (unenjoyable and monotone acting, ugly production design, a forced cliché story, and its forgettable) but it manages to amplify say mistakes and add two more, the first being the laughably badly written that makes every single character unlikeable (the only exception is the "villain" portrayed by Sacha Boren Cohen) due to their stupid actions and dialog, and the other new issue being the absence of Burton. Sure I may dislike post "Ed Wood" Burton´s by the numbers style, but still it is more than evident that every time he makes a film he tries to entertain audiences and be as creative as possible (even if he is a one trick pony he still tries to deliver "memorable" visuals), but this sequel is just generic as it doesn't come up with a new solid idea, instead going to the obvious answers.
"Alice Through the Looking Glass" is an unnecessary and unwanted sequel that expands the errors of its already barely mediocre predecessor.
