Review of Alice Neel (2007) by Kens. — 27 May 2007
This film is a rich portrait of Alice Neal done much in the manner of her own brilliant art. In its richness It revealed many of the rough spots of her life and gave us a portrait of her world, With the inclusion of the family members the film takes on a very moving presence.
The film is riveting from beginning to end. The full screen images of her paintings are a spectacular experience and makes me want to see them at the same scale and luminosity in a museum or gallery. The film shows her perserverence against forces out of her control , both as a woman and as an artist working in her manner, In the face of this, to witness her eventual recognition is very moving.
It is finally a wonderful record for all time of Alice Neel and her very special family.
