Wishing that Burton would return to his own creative roots aside, it must be admitted that he still takes imaginative trips through the worlds of others. Well, visually anyways. Here, as is common of his recent projects, style considerably outweighs substance.

The effects, whether applied to the world or the characters, are marvelous. The film's problem lies in the fact that this Wonderland lacks all the whimsy, wordplay, and fractured logic that made the original text so compelling.

And even though the ride still manages to be fun and adventurous, the whole narrative is derailed by one very ridiculous display courtesy of the Hatter, who is not so much mad as he is merely aloof but otherwise level-headed.
