Review of Alice in Wonderland (2010) by Charlotte H — 03 Mar 2016
Although only loosely based on the classic that inspired it, 'Alice in Wonderland' brings more life to the characters, and is a feast for the eyes, despite falling foul to a predictable ending.
The story is a compilation of both Lewis Carroll's 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' and 'Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There' as well as 'Jabberwocky' and Tim Burton's imagination. It starts out very well but becomes increasingly predictable by the minute; nonetheless it is still engaging and doesn't feel tedious, or tiresome to watch.
The characters are all very compelling (I disagree with claims that Alice is a 'bland character') although they are somewhat different to Carroll's originals. This isn't a problem though, as 'Alice in Wonderland' is its own story - not an exact adaptation of the book. Also, many of Carroll's less famous, and less intriguing Wonderland characters have not been included.
This film definitely oozes Burton's charm, but may not be as 'dark' as you expect due to the Disney influence. It's very different to the book, but don't let that put you off; you can still love both!
As many others have already stated it's very nice to look at, but not Burton's best. Nonetheless, I would still recommend to watch, and I'm still looking forward to the sequel!
