Review of Alice in Wonderland (1951) by Ryan V — 21 Nov 2016
Like most animated Disney fare, the 1951 version of Alice in Wonderland takes more than a few liberties with its source material. Conversely, its sing-songy narrative and flair for stylistic imagery evokes the spirit of Lewis Carroll's nonsense poetry in more than a few ways.
Fantasia probably has Alice in Wonderland beat when it comes to surreal aesthetic splendor, but there is still plenty of expressive animation and strong character designs that are bolstered by a well-chosen voice cast of Disney veterans.
Alice in Wonderland was a box office disappointment on its initial release, but it still managed to endure in pop culture's collective consciousness over the following decades and it's not difficult to see why.
