Review of Alice in Wonderland (1951) by Jeremy J — 03 Nov 2017
Surely, no one could possibly create an adaptation of the beloved British novel "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" any better than Lewis Carol himself, right? Well not in my eyes! Disney's take may not be the most faithful and well paced adaptation.
But it is far better than what others have done. *Cough* Tim Burton! *Cough*. Anyways. What is is that makes this adaptation the best to me? Well it's mostly because of the animation and color scheme.
This is definitely the most colorful Disney film of the 50's, and arguably one of the most colorful Disney films in the whole cannon. But what really attracts me the most is the Cheshire Cat. Not only is he my favorite character in the film, but also one of my favorite Disney characters of all time! In fact, believe it or not, I am actually wearing my Cheshire Cat sweatshirt right now as I am writing this review! I mainly like him because of his voice and movements.
Sterling Holloway did a spectacular job voicing him. As he does with all of his characters that is. This is not to say that the film is perfect however. The story is clearly all over the place with a very rushed feeling pacing.
On top of that, the characters (With the exception of Alice herself) are all just one-dimensional and sometimes pointless. Don't get me wrong. They aren't horrible characters whatsoever. Some like the Mad Hatter and the March Hare are incredibly amusing.
But some like Bill and Tweedledee & Tweedledum are extremely pointless that you could honestly take them out of the film and nothing would be different. But the biggest problem with this film no doubt is the amount of songs.
Oh my god...... These songs are so annoying! And the funny thing is that they're not even that memorable to begin with. But when they appear, they will get stuck in your head for a brief moment. Overall, Alice in Wonderland is a lovely edition to the Disney cannon with some positives and negatives.
It will always have a place in my heart no matter what age I am.
