Review of Alice in the Cities (1974) by R.a. L — 15 Jun 2010
The first part of a loose trilogy of road movies potrays the relationship between a failing German journalist and a young girl he befriends due to circumstance rather than choice. Throughout the 110 minutes of the film their relationship develops into that of a father/daughter - although they are not related.
The story starts in New York where Alice gets left with Philip by her mother in an airport, what follows is the story of Alice and Philip as they travel through Amsterdam and then various german towns in search of her grandmother.
What is great about this film especially watching it 30+ years since it's initial release is the pure simplicity of the times and the bond that develops between them.
