Review of Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974) by Mar T — 09 Jun 2008
One of the only Scorsese films to focus on a female protagonist (if not THE only one), they smartly chose Ellen Burstyn as the title character. Because of the storyline, the film has a softness not usually found in a Scorsese flick, but because of Burstynâ??s spunkiness and sarcasm, it doesnâ??t descend into overly sentimental icky-sweetness, as could have easily been the case.
The cast is uniformly good, and includes Harvey Keitel, Vic Tayback (who would reprise his role in the TV sitcom based on this film), Kris Kristofferson, Billy Green Bush, a twelve-year old Jodie Foster, and Diane Ladd as Flo (Foster and Ladd each steal every scene theyâ??re respectively in).
