Review of Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974) by Rodney E — 14 Oct 2008
Scorsese showed early on that he could tackle more than just gritty gangster movies and student films. This film has the basis for that TV show Alice and is way better than that show was so you can kiss my grits.
After a Michael Powell influenced dreamlike beginning, we are taken to a rocking modern time as Mott the Hoople jams the soundtrack and we meet Alice nowadays with her son. After she is left a widow, she tries to chase her dream of becoming a singer while being sidetracked as a waitress in a diner.
The cast is good and Kris Kristofferson offers pignant masculinity as Alice's suitor. Harvey Keitel and Jodie Foster have small roles. Movies like this couldnt get made nowadays without coming off as mega cheesed out.
