Michael Mann's chronicle of Muhammed Ali's rise, fall and return is plodding, dry and predictable by biopic standards. The athlete's history with Islam and the United States government are necessary plotpoints, but the athlete's history with his sport is lost in the accounts of his personal struggles.

These accounts are unfortunately boringly adapted, especially since the bouts are so exciting to watch. Each match is riveting, detailed, well-acted and beautifully shot. Will Smith's visceral charisma is thoroughly enjoyable and energetic.

This force, along with Mann's distinct visual style and moving soundtrack, makes Ali completely enjoyable regardless of any lulls in the narrative. Great supporting work from Mario Van Peebles, Mykelti Williamson, and especially Jon Voight who is literally unrecognizable.
