Review of Ali (2012) by Tim C — 10 Jan 2010
Michael Mann's boxing-drama Ali can feel great sometimes, but other times questionable. I can't even really depict this as a biopic because it only spans 10 years of the famous boxer's life.
Though not a great view of the once iconic sports figure, but an important view in a time period of his life. Will Smith gives his best performance to date. He shows us the attitude, the style, and grace of the man who could 'float like a butterfly and sting like a bee'.
The boxing scenes are exhilarating and some of the best in recent date. Mann is able to balance the personal and the political of the one man's story within the racial conflicts of his era. Other than the fact of it only covering 10 years of his life as problem is the running time.
The movie almost clocks 3 hours long and some scenes necessarily don't fit in with the story that we're trying to be told. For example the scene involving Ali and the shooting of Martin Luther King.
It could've been avoided, but that's my opinion. Despite some miscues and problems, Ali is a decent sports film that shouldn't be ignored.
