Review of Ali (2012) by Raveen D — 01 Jun 2012
Being a big fan of Muhammad Ali I was excited when Will Smith secured the part to play the most charismatic if not the most entertaining boxer in history. I loved the movie and I still get goosebumps just watching the trailer alone (not that we should judge any movie by it's trailer as I've learnt over the years).
The movie has an authentic grainy film look which gives life to its late 60s / early 70s backdrop and I'm a sucker authenticity. Director Michael Mann takes his time exploring Ali's character, racial issues and the boxing scene but none of these would have stuck together if it wasn't for Will Smith's portrayal of Ali - besides looking the part, Smith echo's the young boxer in his prime and draws you to the character.
The film takes place in a span of 10 years which might not be enough to give you a complete picture of one of sports most beloved athlete but it's not a film any Ali or Smith fan would want to miss.
