Review of Ali (2001) by Rakeem M — 16 Oct 2009
Not Michael Mann's bet work (that would be "Collateral"), but a solid film nonetheless and an excellent vehicle for Will Smith to show that he is capable of being more than a movie star. Here, Smith sheds his all-too-familiar persona and slips into the role with ease, his interpretation of the man that is Muhammad Ali is magnificent and surpasses mere imitation.
The rest of the cast is wonderful as well, Jamie Foxx is a standout as "Bundini" Brown, but the film belongs to Will Smith without a doubt. My main criticism comes from the film's run-time and it's almost complete lack of humor.
I realize that Mann is not particularly known as a humorist, but Ali's sense of humor is an essential aspect of who he is, and that dreariness makes the film seem to lag in certain parts. All-in-all, it's still a good film and I would recommend it for the acting alone.
