Review of Ali (2001) by Steve S — 01 Jan 2010
*** (out of four).
A mostly effective biopic from director Michael Mann as he attempts to show the complicated life of Muhammad Ali.
Will Smith takes over the role of Ali. He does a pretty decent job, though he sometimes seems like he's just doing an impression of the great boxer instead of fully embodying the essence of the man.
Mann is a great director and manages to keep the long film moving along. The film is decent, but I can't help but feel that is could have been a better look at this complex and fascinating athelete.
