Review of Alfie (2004) by Alice I — 26 Nov 2009
Having read the book and adored the original I feel that this film was very true to the original theme but very cleverly updated to address the same emotional issues that people feel. the alfie in this version is as equally selfish and unpleasant as the Caine version, we have abortion which was illegal in the early 60's replaced by what he thinks was an abortion but really the lady gives birth to his child, much too sad witness the terrible pain that his best friend who is a lovely kind generous and trusting black guy feels...much the same as the AFLie Bass characer in the original except we only see that he is cuckolded while he is in hospital and its his wife that takes the agony and the guilt of adultery and abortion.
I think its a brilliant film. I watched it with the intention of totally hating it but was pleasantly surprised.
