Review of Alfie (2004) by Alysia V — 05 Nov 2009
I've never seen the Michael Caine original of "Alfie" but seeing this remake really makes me want to. Jude Law was perfect in this and pulls of his role of "Alfie" so very well.
He manages to make you loathe him and think him a complete and utter jerk yet, at the same time, keep you wrapped around his little finger and swooning at his charm and good looks. Nicely done, Jude. Loved the filming of this--sort of Andy Warhol-esque throughout.
I like the ending of this and the message it gives. Basically, Alfie, on the outside, appears to have everything. The money, the clothes, the women. But in reality, he has nothing and is left feeling very empty and lost in his life.
I think it proves a good point that womanizing and material things can't provide true happiness and "peace of mind." It's the ending of this film that really makes me love it, showing that Alfie's way of life was not all he thought it cracked up to be.
I will definitely have to check out the original. Side note: Love the Joss Stone remake of the song "Alfie" from this soundtrack.
